Do you want to start composting at home – and take advantage of the excess nutrient-rich moisture to fertilize your plants?
Here’s how to make liquid fertilizer from a compact spinning compost bin, and it doesn’t take any extra effort.
How to Make Liquid Fertilizer from Kitchen Waste:
“Making” liquid fertilizer from your compost doesn’t have to require any extra effort. In fact, with some strategic forethought, you can turn your tumbling composter into a multi-functional device that virtually runs on its own…
1. Take the Work Out of Composting with a Spinning Composter:
First, you want to get a compost bin that rotates and has ventilation. This will speed up the composting process and aerate the mix so it won’t rot. Just give the round barrel a gentle spin every few days to turn the scraps and waste.
Dump in food and garden waste as needed. For example, larger families may add daily, while single people add to the mix every few days or once a week.
The wide top door is convenient for adding waste, but it also makes it simple to remove the finished compost. Simply roll a small wheelbarrow or tub underneath the tumbler, open the door and rotate the bin.
2. Add Both Green & Brown Waste to Speed Up Food Breakdown:
Second, add both brown and green waste to achieve the optimal carbon to nitrogen balance. In other words, add some shredded paper, cardboard and sawdust as well as food scraps, grass cuttings and leaves.
This helps optimize food breakdown, plus you can recycle all sorts of materials into your backyard garden. In fact, you may be able to generate twice as much compost as you originally thought, even without a lot of leftover food scraps.
Keep in mind that “food scraps” also include things like leftover coffee grounds and ground up eggshells. (Not just orange and banana peels, squash seeds, apple cores, veggie skins, etc..)
3. Easily Access Liquid Fertilizer with a Built-in Drain:
Third, choose a compost tumbler that also includes a drainage spout. Therefore, you can easily release excess liquid into a watering can or bucket.
Other barrels can provide drainage, but the nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer ends up draining straight onto the ground below.
Some people may prefer “worm tea” because it contains worm castings that can help fertilize their garden. However, you don’t need to have a Vermicomposter to take advantage of homemade organic liquid fertilizer.
You can use your natural fertilizer in your vegetable garden, yard landscaping and even indoor houseplants. Plus, you can save money from buying chemical-made plant food.
Note: This tumbling composter is especially nice because it is low-cost, easy to set up and requires minimal effort. It also doesn’t require a lot of space, so you can easily set it up on a small patio, balcony or behind a garage.
